Homemade Carpet Stain Remedies

Our carpets take a daily beating, and are often exposed to nightmare coffee, red wine or mud stains. Our domestic cleaners are no stranger to these types of stains, they have a range of tricks up their sleeves to refresh your carpets, and to get them looking good as new.

Before we launch into our homemade carpet remedies, there are a few things you should remember:

Act fast, the longer you leave it the more determined the stain will be to stay.

Blot, don’t rub, rubbing will spread the particles and will embed them deeper into the carpet pile.

Perform a spot test before you use any stain remover on your carpet, to make sure your solution does not damage the carpet itself.

Check your carpet manufacturers guidelines before selecting a stain remover, sometimes they mention specific ingredients to avoid.

Our DIY Carpet Cleaning Solutions

White vinegar is every domestic cleaners secret weapon, it is one of the best natural carpet cleaners available. You can mix it with a whole range of ingredients, to enhance its cleaning properties.

Rub light carpet stains with a mixture of 2 tablespoons of salt to ½ cup of white vinegar, let the solution dry on the carpet and then vacuum it up afterwards.

For larger stains, add 2 tablespoons of borax to the mixture and follow the same instructions as above.

For stubborn, ground in, dirt and other stains, make a paste of 1 tablespoon vinegar to 1 tablespoon cornstarch, rub this into the stain using a dry cloth and let it set for two days before vacuuming it up.

Ammonia is also a powerful stain remover, but be warned, it gives off an extremely strong smell. If you are using ammonia to remove carpet stains, be sure to leave the windows open and to make sure the space is well ventilated.

Our domestic cleaners often mix a solution of 1 cup ammonia to 2 litres of water, they apply this solution to the carpet and let it sit for 15 minutes before blotting the stain until it is removed.

Dishwashing detergent is our domestic cleaners final secret tip, this works in a variety of cleaning situations, including the removal of carpet stains. It is one of the best spot cleaning solutions available to you. Dishwasher detergent can help you remove chocolate stains as well as grease and oil.

Mix 1 tablespoon of dishwashing soap with 2 cups of cold water. Dip a white cloth into the mixture and gently blot the stain until it is gone.
